KEEPING TONNAGE MOVING

AMERICA’S MESSAGE FOR THE WATERFRONT (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Sept'. 11. Mr Ralph J. Chandler, of California, acting representative of the War Shipping Administration in the Anzac area, is at present in Auckland, and has brought a message of goodwill to New Zealand from the United States. In an interview to-day he said his mission is to inquire into the shipping position with a view to seeing whether it is possible to have the ship turned round more expeditiously during the war period. He appreciates the difficulties of the problem facing the United Nations, and is imbued with a spirit of eo-operation and co-ordination, which he says is crystallising in Australia, as far as the loading and discharging of ships is concerned, and is anxious that the same spirit should animate all those in New Zealaudwho have anything to do with shipping. He included in his survey everybody from tho top down to tiio most* humble worker on tho waterfront. “ I ibring a message of co-operation,” ho said. AVo want to turn tho ships round speedily. We don’t want to lose an hour. It is vital to success that wo keep our tonnage moving, so that wo can get through with the job we’ve tackled”. The key to the problem is quick despatch, and I appeal to the watersiders, as well as to everybody else in a position to help, to bring about this desirable end during tho war emergency. It is vita] to victory. The whole war effort depends on this.”
