PATRIOTIC COUNCIL
HEETIK6 OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council was held in ihe Council Chambers yesterday afternoon,, those present being Messrs J. J. Marlow (in the chair), J. Sutherland Ross, J. W. Dove, James Hogg, A. Duncan, H. McDowell Smith, A. C. Cameron, J. L. Salmond, Arthur Barnett, G. Z. Lindlcy, W. G. Kindley, and Dr W. Newlands. PROVINCIAL QUOTAS. The secretary (Mr A. B. Russell) said that he understood the only provinces which had obtained their quotas in the Ail Purposes Appeal were Taranaki and Uawke’s Bay PATRIOTIC FUNDS. it was decided that steps should be taken to have information on the writing paper provided in the various recreational huts that the paper was supplied from patriotic funds. It was further decided that a remit he forwarded to the meeting of the National Patriotic Fund Board in July to give effect lo the proposal. LABOUR REPRESENTATION. Mr Cameron said thal Mr Roy Herbert had been elected president of (he Otago Trades Council of tlie Federation of Labour and would represent the council on the executive. PROGRESS OF APF2AL. Reporting on boliaif of the Appeals Committee, Mr Hogg said that the amount in Otago collected in the All Purposes Appeal to date was £82,000. In May tho amount was £60,000, so the funds were steadily advancing. The amount in band represented 54 2-3 per cent, of the total, and tho appeal, the objective of which was £150,000, closed on September 30. SERVICES CLUB. Reporting for the Services Club Sub-com-mittee, the secretary (Mr A. E. Russell) said that during May 3,669 dinners and teas had been provided at the club. The expense of providing the meals at 3d and 6d respectively was causing something of a problem and there was just a question whether some of those who received meals at the club had the status which justified them in attending to obtain a meal. HEATING OF TRAINS. Mr Cameron reported on the action that had been taken in an endeavour to effect an improvement in the present heating of night leave trains and railway waiting rooms, and the council decided to request the Railway Department to provide adequate heating on the trains arriving here on Saturday mornings. In the event of nothing being done concerning the healing of the waitig rooms, a sub-committee, comprising Messrs Cameron, Dove, and Lindicy was given power lo take what stops it could to meel the position. GENERAL. Mr W. G. Kindiey was appointed to represent the council on the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establishment League. A letter was received from Captain Muir, expressing thanks for gifts of knitted comforts for men engaged on duty on vitai Letters were received from officers of the 2nd New Zealand General Hospital and others expressing thanks for gift parcels.
