PORTUGAL’S FEARS. WASHINGTON, April I.—Mr' SmmiM Welles, at a Press conference, was asked about growing nervousness in Lisbon and statements from travellers recently returned that the Portuguese fear Hitler and a spring invasion. Mr Welles stated that he had no information, but declared that any European country not already battling against the Axis invaders was quite justified in worrying about what may happen in the next few weeks. RUSSIANS ATTACK. LONDON, April I.—The Red Armies have launched major assaults in three sectors —Kalinin, Smolensk, and Kharkov; —according to Stockholm reports. Tanks are attacking Kharkov from the north, south, and east after an allnight artillery barrage, with the main Russian forces concentrating on the Hanks in enveloping movements. INDIAN PROPOSALS. LONDON, April 2.—From New Delhi it is announced that a decision has been reached regarding the British proposals and that a resolution is being drafted. LIQUOR IN WAR TIME. Replying to representatives of women's organisations at Dargaville, the Minister of Health (Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) said he needed no conviction of the evils of the drink traffic, as he had always been opposed to it. While many people would not vote for prohibition, most of them in war time would vote that facilities for the sale of liquor be restricted. The Government was not blind to the evils of drink, which had-increased since the war began, and measures would be taken at an early date to grapple with the situation.— P.A.
