WASTE PAPER
LOCAL “ DRIVE " ON MAY 2 Mr Charles Todd, chairman of the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste, who is in Dunedin just now, has stressed the urgent, need for a great acceleration in the collection of ' all waste materials, particularly paper. This applies not .only to the large centres, to which activities had previously been confined, but to every home and office in the Dominion. Every township could do its part in the collecting and trucking of waste to the sorting centres, said Mr Todd, and the provincial waste boards would supply all the necessary information. LOCAL EFFORT. A special meeting of the executive committee of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council was held this morning, the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) presiding. Mr Todd attended and addressed the meeting, after which it was decided to set up a sub-com-mittee to deal with the organisation of the collection of waste paper throughout the whole of Otago. The committee will act in conjunction with representatives of local bodies, the W.W.S.A., etc., in arranging for the collection. It is proposed to hold a “ drive " in Dunedin on May 2. Representatives of Ratepayers’ Associations, together with a number of head masters of the* local schools, subsequently attended a meeting of the Patriotic Council executive and discussed the question of the best methods of collection. All present promised their assistance in carrying out the scheme.
The hope was expressed that householders and others will take steps to gather together all kinds of clean paper and have it ready for the general collection on May 2.
