QUIET EASTER LIKELY
MORE IMPORTANT WORK AFOOT There are indications that the Easter holidays this year are likely to be much more quietly observed than is customary. There are many reasons for this, most of them, of course, arising from the closer approach to our shores of the war menace. Extensive Home Guard camps are being held, and factories engaged in war industries are not closing down. This means that large numbers of men, and women too, who usually take part in sport or go out of town will be engaged in more important activities. The sporting fixtures which have been arranged are fewer than usual, as are the public functions.
_ The restrictions imposed on travelling by the Railway Department and by the lack of petrol will also keep many citizens from going far afield. The main holiday • sports fixtures in Dunedin will be the Otago Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament at Logan Park, commencing to-morrow, and the Dunedin Bowling Centre's annual tournament. The Dunedin Archery Club will conduct its annual championships at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. Apart from the Riverton meeting on Saturday and Monday, the only racing fixture in the south will be the Beaumont Club’s meeting on Easter Monday, which is always a popular holiday attraction. Another country fixture will be the Waihola Patriotic Committee’s gala day on Easter Saturday. The Strath-Taieri A. and P. Society’s annual show at Middlemarch will not be held this year, on account of the war situation, and many country people will thus be deprived of a popular holiday outing.
