ENEMY AIR RAIDS
SYDNEY, March 8. The Australian Air Ministry; states that Port Moresby and Lae, in New Guinea, were raided to-day by Japanese aircraft, but there are no details of damage or casualties. Bulolo, also in New Guinea, was bombed yesterday by a small force of Japanese aircraft, but there were no casualties.
Later the Minister for Air, Mr A. S. Drakeford, stated that in conditions of good visibility aircraft successfully attacked the aerodrome at Koepang, in Timor, in spite of enemy anti-aircraft lire, Gasmata, in New Britain, was also attacked, and anti-aircraft fire was encountered. Enemy fighters failed to intercept the bombers. Other parts of Now Britain were reconnoitred by the B.A.A.F. From these operations ail our aircraft returned. Enemy reconnaissance of New Guinea continues. SECOND HIGHWAY CHINA'S HEW SUPPLY ROUTE NEW YORK, March 7. China's new supply route from India is now operating, says the Chungking correspondent of the United Press of America. War materials are reaching Lashio over jungle trails, parts of which can bo traversed only by elephants and boats. British and Chinese engineers are rushing the construction of a roadway to permit trucks to haul supplies the entire distance from India, and arc expected to complete the job in, several months. A second highway across the mountains to the north-east of India is being built by Chinese engineers. ARRIVAL IN MADAGASCAR JAPANESE NAVAL AND AIR MISSION CAIRO. March 7. It is reported that a Japanese naval and air mission has arrived at Madagascar, where the French authorities are yielding to Japanese demands on instructions from Vichy under German pressure.
