—Vice-Regal.— The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, received Major-general E. Put-, tick, Chief of the General Staff, atj Government House yesterday. Mr (Britton Smith (Wellington)’• chairman of directors of Smith and Smith Ltd., and Mr J. Sullivan (Christchurch), managing director, are visiting Dunedin. Private A. E. Keane, Cumberland street, and Private H. J; M. Hedges, Arthur street, who have been on sick leave, have left to rejoin their units. Captain Chaplain O. R. Marlow returned north yesterday after spending two days’ leave with his parents. Mr P. Neilson, M.P., was discharged from the Dunedin Hospital yesterday* and will be at his home for some time* Mr Ernest H. Smith, of Johnsonville, arrived by the express yesterday afternoon on a visit to his brother. Colonel E. R. Smith, of London street. At a meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of a motion of sympathy was passed with tha relatives of Mr Malcolm Stewart,' general manager for Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co., who died suddenly yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs (R. K. Hogg, of Otekaike*. have received word that their son, who was recently awarded the D.F.C., was promoted to the rank of squadron leader in December last. He is flying the latest model of Wellington bomber, and considers it a fine machine. The crews of his flight consist of men from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Great Britain. Guests at the Excelsior Hotel include Mr H. Piat, Mr R. J. Hobbs (Christchurch), Miss M. Mackie, Mr D. Mackia (Moeraki). On the register at the Hotel Carlton are Mr J. Mclvor, Mr J. B.
