ANNUAL BURNS CONCERT An annua] observance which never fails to draw a good house in Dunedin is the Robert Burns anniversary concert conducted by the Dunedin Burns Club, and Saturday’s gathering in the Town Hall Concert Chamber once again saw a fairly good attendance. In tlie unavoidable absence of the club’s president,, Mr Arthur Macdonald, the vice-president (Mr J. W. Sutherland) occupied the chair, and extended a cordial welcome to lbe\audience. The programme was a well-varied one with every item enthusiastically received, the function being rich in the national atmosphere. A feature of the evening was an address by Captain Bowman, padre of tbc 2nd Battalian of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment, who spoke of the true greatness of Burns and the background against which ho wrote bis famous poems. His address covered new ground, and was listened to with great interest by the audience. The following programme was presented: Opening ode. ‘ Star o’ Robbie Burns ’; selection, Dunedin Highland Pipe Band; songs—Miss Dora Drake, Miss Bertha Rawlinson, Miss Aileen Young, Messrs’Arthur Lungley and Cecil Wallis; quartet—Misses Rawlinson, Drake, Messrs Wallis and Lungley; duets, Misses Drake and Rawlinson; humorous items, Mr Jamie Paterson; cornet solo, Mr D. Christensen; violin solo, Miss Ethel Wallace; Highland reel and Reel o’ Tulloch—Jsobel . Gray, Shirley Smith, Doreen Road, and, Joy Palonski. Mrs Ernest Drake was the officijil accompanist.
