CRICKET
—- -■ BRABIN BOYS BAT BRIGHTLY Yesterday afternoon under wintry conditions at Carisbrook the Brabin Shield team of young cricketers batted on against their senior—aud in some cases representative—opponents to make 181. It was an excellent showing on a wicket which while slow and easy was not altogether an aid to run-get-ting. , G. J. Robertson carried his morning score to 43, got in freer style than is usual with him; but a still brighter knock was T. Freeman’s 58, which included two 6’s and seven 4’s. Others who reached double figures were R. Mills (15), G. H. Bradley (15 not out), O. Gorman (12), and V. McArlcy (11). A. Knight was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 20 runs. Scott, F. Wcdlake, Proctor, Groves, aud Leader each took one wicket. The innings concluded just upon 4 o’clock. When the seniors batted after the tea interval they fared badly. As iu the ease of the juniors, two batsmen were run out, while McArley (two for 21) and Freeman (one for 19), bowling , very steadily and very well, oven when showers made the ball greasy, disposed of three others between them, so that at “ stumps ” the total was only 64 for five wickets, of which L. Groves ;23 not out, which, included some excellent strokes in front of the wicket) and R. Hunt (who replaced J. Proctor when the latter badly split a finger when making a catch, 9 not out) accounted for half in a modest but debacle-saving partnership. Knight (14) was run out when going along steadily. The fielding of both sides was good.
