SEA CADET CORPS

PRIZE PRESENTATION The Navy League Sea Cadet Corps met last night tor the final parade of the year and presentation of prizes. Members of the public were present. Addressing the cadets, Commander Fraser, the commanding officer, stressed the fact that they should not bo breaking up, even for a short period in times like this, but the boys had worked so very hard during the year that it was felt a spell of four weeks could do no harm. “ I must emphasise the value of sound training,” he said. “ Wo must train and train again to fit us for tasks ahead.” The training that boys had had m the Sea Cadet movement had stood them in good stead wherever they had •>one, he added. It had formed tho solid foundation upon which they had found it not difficult to build. The Commander expressed thanks to tho Dunedin City Corporation. the Dunedin Savings Bank, the Navy League, and the many citizens who had all given valuable help in supporting the Sea Cadet movement. The interest they had shown had been greatly appreciated. Mr D. C. Cameron, deputy mayor, in the unavoidable absence of the mayor, expressed the council’s pleasure at the excellent work being done by the Sea Cadet Corps. Speaking on behalf of the Dunedin Savings Bank, he said that the work of the cadets would not go lacking so far as the bank was concerned. He expressed the sincere interest taken in the work of the boys by all, and extended good wishes on behalf of the city. Mr J. Sutherland Ross, president of the Otago Branch of the Navy League, briefly addressed the cadets, expressing a feeling of pride at seeing such a good turn-out. Now that Government recognition, to which they were entitled, had been given, it was going to be of great assistance to the Sea Cadet Corps. He expressed satisfaction that the hoys were doing a great job of work for King and country. Prize Winners. —Commercial Travellers’ Medal (for the best all-round rating for 19411; Cadet R. Proctor. Seamanship trophy (Devonshire Cup) : Starboard Watch (Cadet P.O. Wilson). Signalling trophy (for tho most progressive signalman for the year 1941) : Signalman C. H. Wilson. Best attendance on parade: Cadet R Moody. Sutherland Ross trophy (for the best cadet in boat work) : Cadet Acting Leading Seaman D. Matheson.
