NAVY LEAGUE NOTES

Among the comforts sent overseas some little time ago was a beautiful baby’s shawl, the gift of one of our knitters. The dos)r has just received a letter from the lion, secretary of the committee concerned, with very appreciative thanks both for the shawl and the letter which accompanied it: “ Your gift has been given personally to a young widow of a naval rating, who is expecting her first baby shortly. She is young and so very brave, and has expressed a wish to write to you herself. . . It is a great joy to receive so many gifts from overseas—we do so appreciate it, and you may rest assured that everything that comes to us is given personally to those in need. Many have lost their homes by enemy action, as well as husbands.” It is good to know that, through the Navy League, such close and personal relations are possible with the families of the seamen. In this case it was effected by collaboration with the Royal Naval Friendly Union of Sailors’ Wives, of which Lady Pound is president. Mrs Fraser, wife of the Prime Miniate]-, visited the spinning centre on Thursday morning, and after the inspection (by the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence) of the Sea Cadets in the evening, also saw the ward room where the wool is distributed. Gifts have been received specially for the Christmas parcels for New Zealand minesweepers, also for the merchant navy, in addition to those for general purposes. The following are thanked for gifts and work sent in during the week ended November 27: —Cambrian-St. Bathans W.D.F.U., Cambrian School, DickinsOn Mytton Ltd., Dunedin branch W D F U., Palmerston branch W.D.F.U., Palmerston Patriotic Committee, Upper Waitaki branch W.D.F.U., Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd., Mesdames Bagiev, Charles Begg, Cox, Dunn, W.
