WINTRY WEATHER
SPORTS FIXTURES OFF TROTS POSTPONED Quite a full programme of sporting events had been arranged for to-day, but once more weather conditions have compelled cancellation or postponement of fixtures, the heavy rain which fell yesterday and this morning making tracks, grounds, greens, and courts quite unlit for use. The second day of the For bury Trotting Club meeting has been put forward to Monday, and the meeting will conclude on Tuesday. The gala organised by the Otago Ladies’ Athletic Club, and which track conditions prevented being held last Saturday, lias had again to be postponed, this time until December 13. The primary schools’ tennis tournament. the one-day patriotic bowling tournament among north end clubs, and ail cricket matches were also fixtures which have had to be abandoned for the day. UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS. During the past week the weather ’has done its best to settle into a seasonable channel, but the disturbing influences wdiicb have been so marked this spring again triumphed yesterday. For several hours, from 11.30 a.m., thduder rumbled, around the hills, and some heavy peals, accompanied by bright flashes of lightning, burst over the city. The thunder faded away about 3.45 p.m., following which torrential rain and hail fell in parts of the city. About 11 o’clock last night a south-westerly change developed, a strong wind rising and heavy intermittent rain falling. Conditions this morning were extremely cold, and the strong blustery wind added to the unpleasantness of being out of doors. With grounds already well sudden from heavy night rains during the week, much of last night’s rain did not sink in, and this morning there was considerable surface water lying about reserves and gardens. The wind had some drying effect, however, but insufficient to permit the holding of outdoor sporting events. The storm yesterday was reported to be very severe along the coast for a few miles north of Waitati, and thunder was continuous for four hours. The rain appears to have been fairly widespread, but not very heavy away from the thunder areas, and this morning all roads were reported to be clear.
