OIL TANKS BATTLE
GUARDS REPULSE ATTACKERS An unexpected attack, launched a night or two ago by units of the 2nd Scottish Infantry Battalion on the oil tanks at Pelichet Buy, did not catch the guards unawares, and after a stern struggle the attackers were driven off with heavy losses. The guards had no foreknowledge of the attack, but the stealthy movements of the advancing Scottish did not go unseen At once a general alarm was sounded, and the guards were at their posts I'eady for the attack. This came from several quarters, but every point was covered by the guards in their general plan of defence, so that, although numerically superior, the attackers held no tactical advantage. There were approximately 120 men in the attacking force, but the fierceness of the defence, in which machine guns and bombs were used, resulted in a highly cralitabhy victory for the guards. It speaks highly of the alertness of the guards that such a vigorous and large attack should have been observed before it was properly launched, and that the plan of defence was sufficiently strong to repel the attackers.
