STRAND Shadowy spectres, a haunted castle, and a life and death struggle for a buried treasure furnish suspense and thrills in Universal’s drama, ‘Horror Island,’. which comes tomorrow to the Strand. Bick Foran, popular action hero; Eeo Carrillo, famous character personality; and Peggy Moran, screen beauty, head the brilliant group of players. In what is described as .a spine-tingling story, they embark on a week-end cruise to a deserted island, supposed hideout of Captain Morgan, pirate chief .famous in history, and legend. Novel comedy interludes are’ furnished by Carrillo, Fuzzy Knight, Lewis Howard, and Walter Catlett, while terrifying menace portrayals are essayed by Ralph ( Harolde, John. Joan Bennett hilariously goes to work on Wall street in Columbia’s delightful new comedy, She Knew All the Answers,’ which will be opened to-morrow at the Octagon. With Franchot Tone co-starred ns a Wall street broker '.who doesn’t like show girls, ‘ She Knew All the Answers ’ is one of the gayest and giddiest comedies of the year. Miss Bennett appears as a night club star, who wants to marry a millionaire playboy. Tone, the boy’s guardian, is a stiff-necked, ultra-conservative financier, who absolutely forbids the marriage. Determined to "win his approval, she talks him into giving her. a job in his office and manages to impress him, not only by upsetting his- equanimity, but the equanimity of the Stock Exchange itself. ' 1 / ST. JAMES * Washington Melodrama,’ which heads to-morrow’s double bill at the St. Janies, not only brings to the screen a new idea in detective stories, but, along with veteran Frank Morgan, presents several young players on the threshold of stardom. Chief among these is Ann Rutherford, who is glamorous and dramatic in the romantic lead. ‘ Washington Melodrama ’ deals .with a millionaire philanthropist involved in a sinister plot and murder mystery in the midst of important national affairs. His' daughter abandons society to turn amateur detective with the aid of her fiance, as newspaperman, to solve the mystery and clear her father. Mischa Auer has never before had a role equal to that assigned him. in Universal’s new comedy, ‘Sing Another Chorus,’ which supports. EMPIRE After establishing herself on tho screen ns the ‘ Perfect Wife,’ Myrna Loy is getting laughs galore by roughing up Melvyu Douglas in ‘ Third Finger, Loft Hand,’ a hilarious story of marriage mix-ups, coming to-morrow to the Empire. This change is only one of the upsets in a screen career which has taken various surprising new tracks. When at high school age, her parents took Myrna to Los Angeles, where she attended the Westlake School for girls and later an art school. Her ability as a sculptress attracted the attention of Rudolph Valentino and resulted in a small rolo in ‘ What Price Beauty,’ which Mrs Valentino produced with Nita Naldi as the star. This was followed by other small roles that steadily grew bigger.
STATE ’ Missing Ten Days,’ a thrill-filled spell of intriguing drama, opens to-morrow at the State, and stars Rex Harrison. Harrison is seen as a young member of the British peerage, who recovers consciousness in 3, Paris nursing home, ten days after an aeroplane crash, to find that he has been removed to hospital for a bullet wound. An obvious amnesia victim, he attempts to retrace his steps for the ten days in which his mind had been blank, to discover who shot him and why, Opposite him is Karen Verne, who makes her motion picture debut, and others' in tho cast include C. V. France, John Abbott, Joan Marion, Leo Genu, and Anthony Holies.
REGENT With Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor in the principal roles, Melro-Goldwyn-liayrr’s ‘ Waterloo Bridge ’ will enter its second week at the Regent, to-morrow. Balancing a tender and beautiful love story against a powerfully dramatic background,"the picture is notable for acting, exciting action, and unusual photography. Vivien Leigh makes another triumph of her role of a petite ballet dancer, while Taylor shares the honours in ono of his finest dramatic parts. Thrilling photography is seen in a timely and authentic London black-out sequence, an air raid shelter in the underground railway, and scenes showing troops leaving Waterloo Station.
