A patron of T. Hobbs’s stable has purchased Articulate, a five-year-old gelding by Rabbi from Babel, (he dam of Wild Talk. So far Articulate has not raced. Big Pay-out. It is estimated that the ring in Victoria paid out at least £IOO,OOO over Skipton’s win in the Melbourne Cup, and then showed a profit on the race.
Dual Engagements. Only Groat. Swoop, Feather Boa,' and Phalanx have engagements in two races nt Invercargill on Saturday, and in (he lighiharncss races Trevathan and Fervent are Die only horses engaged in both. The King’s Horses. Big Game, by the Derby winner, Bahrain, now doing stud duties in America, recently scored his fifth win in succession for H.M. the King. The Royal stable is having its most successful season since 1933. National Yearling Sales. Southland sires are well represented in the entries for the next national yearling sales. Man’s Pal has eight entries, live colts, and three fillies, Siegfried lias three fillies, and Salmagundi a colt. Gore Racing Club Increases Stakes. The decision of the Gore Racing Club (o increase the stakes for Dio Summer meeting by £250 will be a popular one with owners and trainers. The programme when produced should be a very attractive one. Southern Holiday Circuit. Trainers will shortly be mapping out thenprogrammes for the holiday fixtures. _ So far H. Nurse is the only Riccartou trainer who has announced his probable programme. His present intentions arc to race his team at Wingatui, Wyndhain, ami Invercargill. Merry Simon. Since racing at the Grand National meeting last August Merry Simon has been trained by If. Trilford at Washdykc, but has now returned to F. J. Boyle’s stable at Invercargill. It is reported Hint R. J. Mackio has been engaged to ride him in the high-weight handicap at Invercargill on Saturday. Welcome Change. - The committee of the Oamnni Jockey Club has decided to delay the publication j
of handicaps for its meeting to be held on January 2 until the Monday following the Dunedin fixture, to be held on December 26 and 27. Owners and trainers will appreciate this change, and no doubt show it when the nomination li-ts arc published. Boaform Well Treated. When Jioafonn won the Apnrima Handicap at Riverton last Easter she tarried 7.2 and beat Phalanx 7.10 and a big field very easily. Phalanx will meet Boaform on 51b worse lerms over the same distance at Invercargill on Saturday, and should (he track be yielding the latter, with only 7.6 to carry, will be very hard to beat. Fast Gait. Any chance Pol Luck may have had in the New Zealand Trotting Cup was spoiled when Pine Art broke just in front of him. In Hic Ollivier Handicap on the second day, won by Gold Bar, Pot Luck finished close up fifth, and is credited with having paced the mile and live furlongs at hettcr than a 2min 6sec gait for a mile. Though now nine years old, Pot Luck retains his brilliancy well. Also Engaged at Invercargill, Five of the horses engaged in the Army Handicap (3.43), to be run on the opening day of the Porbury .Park. Meeting, have been accepted for in the Waverley Handicap to be run at Invercargill on Saturday. They are Certainty, Flying Peggy, Monaco, Recast, and Trevathan. On his Banks Peninsula form, Monaco will only have to begin correctly to be the hardest to beat. England’s Champion Jockey. The accident which incapacitated Gordon Richards has enabled Harry Wragg (39) to become ebamvnon jockey of the season in England. The racing year does Hob' end until this week, but with three meetings to go AVragg’s score was 68, nine more than that of Ephriam Smith. AVragg has been in an anti-aircraft battery since mid-July, and often bas gone straight from night duly to a racecourse.
Good Trial. At the Banks Peninsula Meeting early this month Marco Polo, a five-vcar-old stallion by Jack Potts from a Harold Dillon mare, gave away nearly 100yds at (lie start of the mile and a-half race, and then boat all but the first and second horses, his time being 3min 39scc. Marco Polo, wbo is one of M. C. MeTigue’s loam, is handicapped to start off the limit in the Hurricane Handicap, class 3min 38soc, on the opening day of the Porbury Park Meeting. Dark Hazard. Though Dark Hazard did not win a race at Addington last week, ho put up two sterling performances, each over a mile ami five furlongs. On the second day he was beaten, only by half a length by Lament, and registered 3min 36 l-ssec, equal to 4min 23 15sec for two miles. On the third day Lament again beat him in the New Zealand Trotting Championshin, which was run over the same, distance and during a'very strong gale of wind. There was only a head between tliom in this race, and Dark Hazard’s time was 3niin 37 l-ssec. Tn the King George Handicap, (o be run at Porbury Park on Saturday of next week Dark Hazard has been assessed at 4min 31see. Being a straight-out trotter, lie is not likely to begin as smartly as the pacers, and in"this respect will be at a disadvantage, but he is a high-class trotter, and I lie distance is not likely to trouble him. Certissimus, It was staled at the Addington meeting last week that the owner of Certissimus missed the nominations for his champion. It was also stated that Certissimus had been doing stud duties, having been mated with 25 marcs. He has been nominated for the faster class races for trotters at the Porbury Park meeting, and, if produced, will start off the limit in the Dominion Handicap, class 3min 44sec (equal to 3uiin 27sec for a mile and a-half) on Saturday week. On the second occasion that Certissimus won at Porbury Park lastseason he established a track record of 3inin 18sec for the mile and a-half. This is equal to about 3min 34 2-ssec for a mile and five furlongs, and on times the South Canterbury champion would appear to hold a royal chance. When Within, who will also start oft the limit in the same race, won the Ilohnwood Handicap, one mile find five furlongs, at: Addington last Friday she went 3miii 32 2-sscc. Within and Certissimus met over a mile and a-half at Ashburton last April, when the former, in receipt of 48y<ls, beat < CcrUssimus_ by half a length, their respective times being 3min 27-ec and 3min 23 l-ssoc. Another meeting between this pair will be interesting, and Within will have the advantage of having recent racing condition.
