FORBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB

APRIL DIRECT REPERCUSSIONS At a meeting- of {lie committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club last night, tho president (Mr B. S. Irwin) was in the chair, and Messrs James Mitchell, H. Archbold, A, H. Todd, R, Iv. Aitchison, A. Ferguson, T. Fogg, and James Black were also present. In reply to a re,quest from tho St. John Ambulance Association for a grant, tho Chairman referred to the fact that tho club had made a fixed payment of £5 a day to tho association for attendance at meetings. Members agreed that tho association was doing good work under tho abnormal conditions prevailing, and it was decided to make a donation of £5 ss. A letter was received from the_ New Zealand Trotting Conference enclosing a copy of a letter from tho appeal judges in the April Direct case, in reply to a statement by Mr A. G. Neill that at the hearing of tho appeal of the Forbury Park committee he had not known that tho judges were in possession of written statements from tho Trotting Association in regard to tho case and had, therefore, no opportunity to meet them. Tho appeal judges replied that they had had no written statement from tho association. Mr Irwin said ‘that, curiously enough, reference was made in the judgment of tho appeal to “ a written statement by tho association.” It was decided tc receive the letter. On behalf of Mr J. W. Brosnan, owner of Nightbeam, Messrs Johnston and Kip*' ponberger, solicitors, Rangiora, wrote stating that Brosnan had suffered a serious loss in connection with replacing April Direct in first position after the club had disqualified April Direct and placed Nightbeam first. It was explained that Brosnan was now being asked to refund the sum of £l3B 12s, and the firm of solicitors stated that Brosnan was prepared to refund that amount of tho stake .won provided the Forbury Park committee at the same time would give him a grant of half the amount as a contribution by the club towards the loss which he had suffered, due to the club’s decision.

It was decided to reply that the club recognised no, liability. • Correspondence from Mr G. R. Martin (Gore) was also road, in which he stated that apparently ■ the I’orbury Park Trotting Club was nob making any move to right the injury done to Mrs E. R. Baldwin, owner of April Direct, when her horse was disqualified last May, and threatening to tako legal action to secure the stake money. Accounts totalling £SB 18s 2d were passed for payment.
