PROMOTED TO SQUADRON LEADER Advice lias been received _by cablcgram of the promotion oi Flight-lieu-tenant A M. I’aapc, D.F.C., of Dunedin, to the rank of squadron leader. Squadron Leader I’aapo, who is only 22 years of age, is a son of Mr A, A. I’aape, of Dunedin, and has served in the Bomber Command since the outbreak of war. Me was educated at the High Street School and Waitaki Boys’ High School, where he matriculated at the age of 1-1. His preliminary air training was received at the Taicri aerodrome, and, after a course at Wigrum. he left to join the I’.A.F. in April. 1938. Up to June last, he had had no fewer than oO operational Mights over enemy territory. The citation in respect of the award of the D.F.C. to him early this year stated that ho had carried out operations with conspicuous success and devotion to duty and with great determination and gallantry. MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES U’.A.V WELLINGTON, Oct. IE Air Headquarters announced to-day that among Now Zealanders mentioned in despatches a tew days ago appeared the name of Flying-officer L. J. Jowl. This should have read Flying-officer L. J. Joel, the error haring occurred in transmission. [Flying-officer L. J. Joel was educated* at the St. Clair School and the Otago Boys’ High School. He left Dunedin in February, 1938, to work his passage Home, and ho joined the U.A.F. as a temporary pilot in August of the same year. In November he was granted a commission as a pilot officer. Volunteering for service in Africa, he left England in the same mouth, and was stationed in both Cairo and Mombasa before the war. Tie was sent later to the Sudan, where ho remained during the Abyssinian campaign. Since that time ho has been serving in the Middle East. He was promoted to flight lieutenant a lew months ago.]
