DEFAULTERS’ CAMPS

FIRST READY IN NOVEMBER CIVIL RIGHTS HOT WITHDRAWN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 34. An announcement that tho establishment of military defaulters’ camps was being actively undertaken was made by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, when the House met at 7.30 to-night, in replying to an urgent question by Mr Broadfoot. The Minister added that tho first of the camps would be ready for occupation early in November. The inmates of such camps would be engaged in breaking in land for settlement, roadmaking, tree planting, drainage, farming, and other work in connection with the maintenance of the camp. Mr Broadfoot had also asked whether defaulters and conscientious objectors would be deprived of their civil rights for at least 35 years. Mr Semple, in reply to this portion of tho question, said the answer was an emphatic “ No.”
