MONDAY, OCTOBER 6. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined 20s on a charge of drunkenness. Richard Edininston (19), for whom Mr W. J. Meade appeared, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and using obscene language in Lower High street on Saturday night.—The defendant, said counsel, had been plied with drink and had no recollection of later events. Counsel added that the Bench refrain from entering, a conviction on the second charge.—On the charge of drunkenness defendant itas_ fined 20s, and the second charge was adjourned for 12 months on conditions named by the magistrate. THEFT OF CLOTHING. A man aged 72 pleaded guilty to a charge of the theft of a coat and waistcoat, the property of a fellow boarder at the Salvation Army Shelter. He had taken some rum when suffering from an attack of ’flu, he said, and was sorry for what he had done. Detective-sergeant Hall said that accused who had been drinking, took the coat and vest and had sold the coat to a second-hand dealer. Major Taylor, of the Salvation Army, said that the accused was a decent old man, who never gave any trouble. The Magistrate adjourned the matter for 12 months, adding that in view of accused’s age and previous good record the Press might see fit to suppress his name.

, FALSE PRETENCES. George Anderson (62), with a record of 41 previous convictions, mostly for false pretences, pleaded guilty to four charges which involved the obtaining of sums of money ranging from Is 6d to £1 6s 2d from shopkeepers by false representations. Accused’s method was to call at a shop, give an order for goods to a fairly substantial amount, and then ask for the loan of a sum in order to send a cable or a telegram. The accused, whom Detective-sergeant Hall described as incorrigible, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the major charge and convicted and discharged on the others. ASSAULT ALLEGED. Charged with having on Saturday, at Portobello, assaulted l James Thomas Rlaney, Clifford Blackwell (60) and Lillian Blackwell (35), for whom Mr A. G. Neil appeared, pleaded not guilty.—On the application of Sergeant T. Johnston (who said that the assaulted man was in the Hospital), the accused were remanded until next Monday, bail being fixed in the sum of £5 in each case.
