SWAM AWAY FROM LADEN LIFEBOAT MOMENT AFTER PINK STAR SINKING (Rec. noon.) LONDON, Sept. 30. A, member of the crew of the torpedoed American-owned vessel Pink Star swam up to the only lifeboat, saw it full, waved good-bye, and • swam away again. He was James Cassidy, of New Brunswick, and the story of his gallantly was related by the master of the ship, Captain Mackenzie, who landed yesterday with 24 survivors at a British port. “ Cassidy’s act was the finest thing I have ever seen,” ho said. “We did not see him again.” The newspapers describe Cassidy as a gallant gentleman, his action recalling'Captain Oates’s gesture during Scott’s last expedition in the Antarctic. T DISABLED PRISONERS AHGLO-GERMAH EXCHANGE AGREEMENT LONDON. Oct. 1. Berlin announces that the first exchange of British and German disabled prisoners of war will take place this week. The exchange will take place at a French Channel port on Saturday. AMERICAN SHIPS CONVOYED ACROSS PACIFIC (Rbc. 1.5 p.m.) CHUNGKING, September 30. Dr Stephen Pan, former professor of international relations, said the United States navy was convoying vessels across the Pacific via the Netherlands East Indies and Singapore to Rangoon. Dr Pan said he boarded a ship at San Francsico in July. It was loaded with 20 bombers and 200 trucks for the Netherlands East Indies, also pursuit planes, 100 trucks, .and American volunteer pilots, mechanics, doctors, and nurses for China. EMPIRE AIR TRAINING GOOD PROGRESS IN CANADA MONTREAL, (Rec. 12.45 j>.m.) Sept. 30. “ The British Commonwealth air training scheme will extend until the present number of schools and aerodromes is almost doubled,” said the Minister of Air Power in a speech at a joint meeting of the St. Lawrence, Riwanis, and Montreal Chambers of Commerce. u Before April, 1943, the original termination date for the plan, the Canadians will have invested 900,000,000dol in air training, and the Air Force will have grown from 45,000 to 100.000 men and women, including Australians.
