WELLINGTON AND UNIVERSITIES DRAW PAEWAI’S PLAY DELIGHTS CROWD (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. The Rugby season in Wellington was brought to a close to-day, when the Wellington representatives drew with the New Zealand University team, 6 points each. Conditions were ideal, but the ground was in a very broken state following a long spell of wet weather. The match was interesting because of the even scoring, and New Zealand Universities were unlucky in not snatching a last-minute victory, when they crossed the Wellington lino for what appeared to be a legitimate, try, but a knock-on was ruled. Nevertheless, the football was disappointing, both sides fumbling the ball n great deal, tints causing inucli promising play to bo nipped in the bud. If (be genera! team play was not up to expectations, however, there was much individual play of a high standard. The outstanding player was M. N. Paewni, the Otago University half-back, who was the idol of the crowd and revealed real Rugby genius at times. University won most of the ball, but it came back slowly, and Paewai’s performance in tbe circumstances was excellent. Tbe University backs combined better than Wellington, but the latter’s tackling proved an effective counter. N. Lino scored for New Zealand Universities, following a brilliant piece of . individual play by Paowai. The latter also kicked a penalty goal. Dance kicked two penalty goals for Wellington. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 28. The Auckland Rugby representatives defeated South Auckland in the last match of the season by 19 points to 11. Boggs (2), Don, and Wiles scored tries for Auckland, Kingstono converting two and kicking a penalty goal. Conroy and Rogers scored tries for South Auckland, the latter converting one and kicking a penalty goal. HARRIERS’ MATCH The annual football match between the Caversham and Civil Service Harriers was played on Saturday at the Caledonian Ground. The ground was in excellent, condition, and a fast game resulted. From the start Caversham attacked strongly, and only mistakes in handling kept them out. The Civil Service forwards fought back and took play to the Caversham line, where Geddes kicked an easy penalty. Shortly afterwards Nelson ran _ strongly down the wing, sending the ball infield to Bradhsaw, who scored a good try at the corner. Geddes converted with a splendid kick. Making good use of the wind, Civil Service attacked again from the kick-off, and Drummond scored a try by the posts, Geddes again adding the major points. Civil Service 13, Caversham 0. With the wind behind them Caversham attacked hotly alter the resumption, and Weir scored For a lime the play was scrappy and remained m midfield. Caversham were not to be denied, however, and after a series of scrums on the line Lena scored a well-deserved try. Civil Service 13, Caversham 6. The final quarter of an hour was keenly contested, but there was no alteration to the score. Mr D. A. Kilgour was the referee. SUVA COMPETITIONS NEW ZEALANDERS’ SUCCESSES SUVA, September 28. Brigadier Cunningham presented the trophies at the end of the Suva Rugby Union’s season. Brigade units won the Escott Shield 1941 competition and the knock-out and goal-kicking final. In tins European matches to-day New Zealand A defeated Suva A by 14 points to 6, and New Zealand B defeated Suva B, 8-3. ASSOCIATION CODE CHRISTCHURCH GAMES Charity Cup: Western 8. Thistle 3.
