The Tlcv. R. S. Waton, C.F., returned yesterday from Trentham Camp, where he gave addresses at a chaplains’ school
of instruction. Mr O. T. Bcatson for several years * member of the staff of the Bluff School, has taken up an appointment on the staff of the Otago Boys’ High School. Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner in New Zealand for the United Kingdom, left Wellington j-esterday for: Auckland. He will return to Wellington on Monday. Mr W. J. Garnett, official secretary; in the office of Sir Harry Batterbee,High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will shortly leave New Zealand to join the office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom ini Australia. He will be succeeded by Mr R. R. Sedgwick, who will arrive in New; Zealand from Australia towards the end of October.
Constable R. 1L Watts, who has been, stationed at Dunedin for the past sis years, has received notice of his transfer to Oamaru. Cable"'advice has been received that Captain R. S. Grr, who is serving abroad with an Otago-Canterbury infantry battalion, has been promoted to the rank of major. After 40 years’ service in different. Government departments, including many years as a member of the secretarial staff of Parliament, Mr S. Y* Jones, chief private secretary to the Minister of Labour and Mines, retired on superannuation yesterday.—Press Association. The death is announced from Wellington of Mr James Smith, late superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company, aged 81. He had nearly 50 years’ service with the company, and was well known among the shipping community. He was a prominent member of the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers.
