In the latter case they must be brief. .Mrs Richard Hudson returned on Monday from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs O’Callaghan is paying a visit to the North Island. Mrs L. G. do la Perrelle has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Dr and Mrs Sydney Allen and Miss Judith Allen have returned to New Plymouth. Mrs Hugh Speight was hostess at a most enjoyable 5 o’clock party on Saturday at her homo in Sheen street, given in honour of Second-lieutenant L. E. Pithie, at present on leave, and Mrs Pithio.

The wives of solicitors in the Otago district will be in charge of the Dug-out in the Octagon on Friday' next.' Donations of cakes, sweets, produce, etc., will be gratefully received at the stall on Friday morning.

Mrs Ferguson presided at the Waitati Women's Institute meeting, held on Tuesday. The motto was: ‘‘The threads of Empire strengthen more and more ” ; and the roll call, “ A gift for a soldier’s parcel, and a war-time story.” A talk on ‘ Problems of the Pacific ’ was given by Mr Brailsford, W.E.A. tutor. Airs South was chosen as delegate to the conference at Mosgicl. The hostesses were Mesdames Blacklaws and Webber.

At the monthly social afternoon in the Theosophical Hall, an enjoyable half-hour programme of music consisted of instrumental trio (Airs Barkman, Miss K. Dobbin, Air O. Stokes) ; vocal solos by Airs A, C. Elliott, accompanied by Miss E. Frye; and recitations by Miss F. Townsend. A short talk on ‘ The Symbol V ’ was given by Mr MTiWan, who stressed the importance of its more sacred aspect. In announcing afternoon tea, Airs AI. Stokes thanked all contributing to a happy afternoon. The hall was artistically decorated with winter roses. Students’ Donation. Home Science students, as the result of their annual ball and generous donations given in connection with it, wore able to hand over £3O to the Dunedin lied Cross Society. Royal Gift to Girl. While 14-year-old Mabel Knibbs. of Grove road, Windsor, was walking in a .War Weapons Week procession she dropped her handbag, which was run over by a lorry. Princess Alargaret saw the incident. Now Alabel has received a new handbag from the King and Queen, Thousandth Case Packed. To mark the packing of the thousandth case sent to England by the Otago branch of the Lady Galway Guild, 800 of which have arrived safely, the mayoress (Airs A. U. Allen )invited

the conveners of the various depots, numbering between 30 and 40, and the packers to afternoon tea yesterday in the reception rooms of the Town Hall. The tables, were very prettily decorated with spring (lowers. Mr Allen, who was present, thanked the guild for the splendid work done, and Air; J. R. Fairbairn replied on behalf of the members.

Retiring President Honoured. In honour of Airs F. H. Hudson, who is retiring from the position of president of the Alothers’ Union in the Dunedin diocese, members of the executive gathered on Alonday afternoon at Bishop’s House, the residence of Bishop and Airs Fitchett, in Dunottar. A presentation of a prayer book, suitably inscribed, was made to Airs Hudson, and of a silver table napkin ring with the union badge engraved on it to Airs W. A. Harnblett who has concluded 13 years’ service on the executive. Sprays of flowers were also given to Airs Fitchett, Airs Hudson, and the incoming president (Airs H. Parata). Afternoon tea was served later in the dining room, where the table was charmingly decorated with bowls of spring flowers and sweet-smelling daphne.

Federation of University Women. The Federation of University Women held an afternoon function in the Otago Women’s Club on Saturday, when an interesting talk on Papua was given by Airs Russell Abel. Miss L. S. Alorton, president of the federation, received the guests, and welcomed specially those members who have been unable to attend the monthly evening meetings. Following afternoon tea Aliss Alorton referred to the war effort of the federation, and read extracts from a letter from a member in London.

Fund for Sister Matthews. Ibe sum of £660 lias now been collected to help Sister Phyllis Alatthews, the New Zealand nurse who was so seriously injured in the ill-fated Rangitan e that, her professional career °is ended, and she will no longer be able to perform any work entailing the use of her hands. Arrangements will bo made to send a gift of £IOO to Sister Alatthews, who is in hospital in Sydney, and an effort will bo made to raise the fund to £I,OOO. It has been pointed out by the organisers of the fund that oven this sum invested at present is worth only 13s 6d a week.

League of Mothers. The thirteenth annual meeting of the Alilton branch of the League of Alothers was held in Millar Hall, when Airs IT. Wilson g-elconicd an excellent attendance- of members and friends. The report expressed sympathy with two bereaved members, and offered congratulation on a successful year. The membership stands at 66. The meettings were of an interesting character, the various speakers delivering addresses of an instructive nature. Several letters have been received from the link in Alouiaire, Scotland. Reference was made to the resignation of Airs H. APCallum, secretary and president for 11 years and a minute of appreciation was recorded. The thought for the month was read by Airs Alorton. A paper on ‘ Conduct of Elections,’ read by the secretary, was very helpful. The election of office-bearers resulted l : President, Airs H. Paul; flowers, Airs J. Gray; creche, Airs Dignan; pianist. Mrs Keinan ; hospital visitors, Alesdames ,1. Bowie and T. Bedford. A social hour and a oup of tea concluded a successful meeting.
