GERMANY’S PLANS FOR RUSSIAN ATTACK OPEN LETTER TO HITLER LONDON, July 29. Herr Hess’s betrayal of Germany’s plans for attacking Russia were broadcast by the 8.8.0. in an open letter in German to Hitler. The broadcast said: “Hess disagreed with your plans against Russia. He wanted peace first and came to Britain to make peace. You thought the British would ask for peace and would not associate with Russia. Hess knew better. He knew this would be the twofronted war which you very much dreaded and which you had sworn to avoid. Wo acted in silence;. Rorty days and nights were between Hess’s flight and your attack on Russia. Your plans were betrayed by the man you made and loved.” The Moscow radio announced that Dr Karl Haushofer, a German geographer and officer and a friend of Hess, committed suicide in a concentration camp in Bavaria, where he was interned after Hess’s flight.

Following a sharp protest from Berlin, the Congressional Committee which is investigating anti-aircraft activities has decided to surrender a portable radio transmitter weighing 5001 b, consigned to the German Embassy, and other confiscated property, including documents in code, photographs, motion films, and other propaganda elements. The Germans complained, of violation of diplomatic immunity and a breach of international law. HOLLAND’S POLICY NO PARLEY WITH NAZIS GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONING IN ENGLAND (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 28. Apart from a change in the Defence Department, the personnel of the Netherlands Government in London, which has been appointed by. Queen Wilhelmina, remains unaltered. In view of the great importance attached now to the Netherlands navy, a separate Navy Department has been created. The department will function under Vice-admiral Furstner’s direction. The Netherlands Government intimated that “ the entire conduct of affairs and the method of working are and will continue to he directed to participate most energetically with the Allies and the United States in the prosecution of the war, the regaining of their complete independence, and the solution of problems which will occur after-wards. The Government also affirmed its intention to place its services at the disposal of the Queen upon her return to the Netherlands. The Government unconditionally determined that no parley whatsoever with the Nazi regime will be entertained. Neither discussions, nor negotiations with Hitler and his conspirators will be entered into. Every effort which the Netherlands is capable of making will be made in order to assist in the liquidation of present-day Nazi Germany.

THE DUKE OF KENT

ARRIVAL IN CANADA TOUR OF AIR TRAINING SCHOOLS , i (Rec. 9.25 a.m.) OTTAWA, July 29. The Duke of Kent arrived at Rockliffe airport and was met by the Earl of Athlone, Mr Mackenzie King, and Mr Malcolm MacDonald. He then drove to Rideau Hall, where he will be the guest of the Governor-General. Accompanying the Duke_ were two R.A.F. officers. Group-captain Sir Louis Greig and Flight-lieutenant F. J. Ferguson. His private secretary, Mr J. A. Lowther, arrived last week. The Duke of Kent will shortly begin an inspection tour of Empire air training establishmetns. He will make the tour by plane, and will visit every province, involving a programme as arduous and extensive as that of the King and Queen. The major difference in the visit is that it is primarily of a service character, and not to be regarded as one of State. The Duke of Kent contemplates a stay of six weeks. It is understood that at present he does not intend to visit the United States. PRESSURE ON THAILAND JAPANESE PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN LONDON, July 29. The Japanese have opened a propaganda campaign against Thailand. The Tokio radio alleges that Britain is exerting strong pressure on the Thai Government, that some troops have already entered the country, and that there has been ominous naval activity. It is also alleged that British residents are being evacuated from Thailand and are being taken to Singapore. These propaganda methods are very similar to those used in the campaign prior to the occupation of Indo-Ohina. THE VICHY AGREEMENT TERMS TO BE KEPT SECRET LONDON, July 30. A Vichy message indicates that the text of the agreement signed between France and Japan provides for military co-operation in what is called “ the defence of Indo-China.” The terms of the agreement are to be kept secret. The agreement says that Japan will still respect the integrity of Indo-China.
