FRIENDSHIP PACT

GERMANY AND TURKEY

RESULT OF STEADY NAZI PRESSURE (British Official Wireless.) Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright (Roe. noon.) RUGBY, June 18. An official report from Berlin states that a pact of friendship has been signed at Ankara between Germany and Turkey. It is claimed that the pact is based on mutual trust and sincere friendship, and holds good for a period of 10 years from the day of signing. An earlier message stated; The possibility is being discussed in London of an agreement between the Turkish Government and Germany being signed within the next few hours. It is realised that the Turkish Government has been under steady pressure from the Germans for some months past to conclude such an agreement, and that resistance to such pressure has steadily reduced the scope of the Nazi proposals. The British Government has been kept fully informed by the Turkish Government throughout the discussions, and there is every reason to believe that the Turkish Government will fulfil its definite promise to include in the preamble a passage specially safeguarding Turkey’s contractual obligations with other countries, which would necessarily include the Anglo-Turkish treaty.
