Advice has been received that Corporal D. C. Berry, Privates L. Gray and D. A. Black (Invercargill), and Signalman P. G. APConnel! are safe and well. At a meeting of the Old Stone Normal School Ex-pupils’ Association last night it was decided to send a letter to Dr W. Newlande expressing sympa-, thy with him in the , loss of his son. Lieutenant John Newlands, who was an ex-pupil of the Normal School. It was announced by the- Acting Prime slinister, the Hon. W. Nash, last night, that, owing to the death of slr T. Mark, Public Service Commissioner, the Government has-appointed Mr J. H. Boyes, Commissioner of the Social Security Department, as Acting Public Service Commissioner from June 10. Mr H. Digby Smith will assume the office of acting commissioner of the Social Security Department. After 40 years’ service with the department slr G. L. Osborne, Auckland district manager of the Government Life Insurance, has retired. Mr Osborne joined the service in Nelson in 1901, and later became district manager at Greymouth and then at Invercargill. After a period at the head office in Wellington he was appointed seven years ago to be district manager in Auckland. The vacancy has been filled by Mr J. S. Prentice, who has been district manager in Christchurch for the past five and a-hal£ years. He joined the service in Dunedin, and was for 11 years district manager in Hamilton.
