APPEAL BOARD SITTING MEDICAL AND DENTAL STUDENTS The Armed Forces Appeal Board, consisting of Mr J. 11. Bartholomew, S.M. (chairman), and Messrs J. Price and H. Hodgson, dealt with a number of appeals this morning, all being either of students at the Medical and Dental Schools, or assistants and lecturers. Mr P. S. Anderson represented the Crown. The hulk of the appeals were sponsored by the deans of the faculties concerned and by the Registrar of the Otago University. The Dean, of the Medical School (Dr C. .E. Hcrcus) appealed on behalf of the following students: —G. T. Davies, E. K. Scorgie, 11. TV. D. Renton, J. C. Baird. L. G. Ellis, K. H. Patterson, N. P. Markham, C. P. sl‘Kee, A. C. Saudston, H. 11. Bennett, R. A. Warren, W. J. Watt, W. R. Aitchison, R. E. Ballantyne. M. G. Somerville, R. B. Bell. E. L. Gillies. R. L. Jones, W. S. Alexander, K. M. France, E. W. Glenn, J. M. Louisson, E. A. Morris, R. C. Hainerton, R. T. Watson, W. C. Mills, W, V. MacFarlane. D. Tomlinson. G. J. Taiuo, J. A. Mae Donald Boyd, G. 51. Goodson, V. D. 51. Jacobsen, and A. J. Patterson. Dr Hcrcus informed the board that ambulance units were being formed which would give students some form of service. A meeting was to be held this week to complete arrangements. A field ambulance corns was being formed, and all medical and dental students would be admitted. All the appeals were adjourned sine die on condition that each student join the ambulance corps being formed. The registrar of the University of Otago and Dr Hercus appealed) on behalf of D. S. Cumberbeach, a chemist at the sledical School. The appeal was adjourned for three months on condition that the University Council take steps to replace the reservist if posA similar appeal on behalf of M. R. Morris, employed in the bacteriological department of the slodical School, was adjourned sine die. The registrar of the University appealed on behalf of M. Y. B. King, a lecturer at the Medical School, on the grounds of public interest. The appeal was adjourned sine die, a condition being that the reservist joined the new ambulance corps. The dean of the Dental School (Dr R. B. Dodds) appealed on behalf of two students at the school, W. G. Wright and L. A. Small. The appeals were adjourned sine die. . The registrar of the University also appealed on behalf of H. W. Henderson, assistant lecturer in chemistry, on the ground! of public interest. The appeal was dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up before October 31, ... S. M, F. Alartin, s'.Sspl year mining student, appealed fdptriftension of time. The registrar of the University stated that the student would be engaged in studios until October. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up 'before October 31. The registrar of the University appealed on behalf of John Niemeyer Findlay, professor of philosophy and psychology at the Otago University. The Chancellor of the University (slr W. J. Morrell) stated that it would be impossible to' replace Professor Findlay. After hearing evidence the appeal was adjourned sine die. on condition that the reservist transfer to the Territorial service for training between October and slarch, An appeal by TV. L. Armitage, a second-year medical student, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, was dismissed on condition that reservist was not called up before November, which would permit him time to complete his second-year course.
