SPORTSMEN’S FINE EFFORT
“COMFORTS FOR FIGHTERS" APPEAL Reporting to last night’s executive meeting of the Otago Provincial Council of Sport, the treasurer (Mr E. L. Hope) slated that the net proceeds of the All Sports Carnival would result in an addition of over £1,200 to the funds of the “ Comforts for Fighters ” appeal. Mr Hope added that the accounting of the carnival was now almost completed, but the sum mentioned did not include tfie proceeds from the All Sports Art Union, which would close on Saturday next. The chairman (Mr W. A. Jenkins) expressed keen satisfaction at the result of the sportsmen’s effort, which had exceeded expectations, and said , that he was sure the outcome of the art unionr.would also be most , salisfatcory. i I It was decided that the All Sports. Art • Union should be drawn at the baths clubroom on Monday, June 30, at 7.30 p.m., and that Baffles 'should be drawn at the carnival shop in Princes street at 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. Mrs Sonntag paid a warm tribute to the members of the Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association for their efforts, not only at the carnival but at the shop that had been conducted by the committee. They had manned this shop for a period of nearly three weeks, and had done splendid work. A motion was carried, expressing the thanks of the council to the members of the Ladies’ Bowling Association and to Mrs J. M’Taggart, who had worked in conjunction with them. The Chairman expressed keen appreciation of the services that had been given to the carnival effort by Miss Mary Martin, Otago area physical welfare and recreation officer, and by Miss Islay Purdie, assistantsecretary of the carnival effort. A similar motion of appreciation was carried in regard tp .the organising work that had been carried out by Miss Beryl Melville in connection with the art union. Votes of thanks were carried to Messrs Gordon Douglas, W. M’Queen, J. Tresize, G. H. Peat, and J. M‘Taggart for_ their work in regard to the carnival, and it was decided also to record appreciation of all those who had assisted the carnival by providing entertainment and supplying prizes and donations for raffles. GENERAL. Owing to his departure from Dunedin, the resignation was received of Mr E. D. Brown, a delegate from the Otago Hockey Association, and a motion was carried expressing appreciation of his services to sport. The Hockey Association advised the appointment of Mr A. Hotting as his successor. In connection with the Council of Sport’s recent application to the City Council for a review of the ground rents charged to sports bodies with a view to some reduction being made, it was reported that the matter had .not yet been finally dealt with by the City. Council, and would come before the next meeting. It was decided to hold the quarterly meeting of the Council of Sport on Mopday, June 30.
