HOME GUARD
PHYSICAL TRAINING IN OAMARU APPOINTMENT OF MR R. E. OIMICK The training of physical instructors for the Home Guard in Oamaru, which was commenced by Mr R. O. Johnson, physical welfare officer for Otago, has now been placed in the charge of Mr R. E. Dimick, of Oamaru. Mr Johnson, whose services were available for a limited time only, states that ho is very satisfied with the progress of instructors in the Oamaru district, and is gratified that Mr Dimick has consented to take over the further training of instructors and the supervision of their work, Mr Dimick was introduced to the class by Mr Johnson, and received an enthusiastic welcome. Major Tonking, M.C., Commander of No. 11 Area, was present to inspect the work of the physical instructors, and commented on their keenness and efficiency. Major Tonkin also said that he was pleased with the type of physical exercises that was being given to guardsmen, there being an absence of over-vigorous, jerky movements that might be harmful to men of mature years. Mr Dimick is well known in amateur athletic circles as the driving force behind the successful North Otago Club, and is also a recognised authority on physical work. A recent tribute to Mr Dimick’s organising ability was his appointment as chief warden for Oamaru in connection with the blackout regulations.
