INTERNED GERMANS
ESCAPE FROM CANADIAN GAMP IN SPARSELY-POPULATED DISTRICT TORONTO, April 19. Near midnight yesterday 28 German prisoners escaped from a north-western Ontario internment camp by a tunnel. The surrounding country is heavily wooded and studded with tiny lakes. The district is sparsely populated and there is practically no food. Altogether 61 prisoners have escaped from the internment authorities ,in Canada.
ELEVEN RECAPTURED
WIDESPREAD MANHUNT TORONTO, April 20. Ten of the Germans who escaped were recaptured, .and it is believed that the others may have stolen a fishing smack in an effort to reach the United States side of Lake Superior. The United States Coastguard Patrol has been warned to keep a look-out. Aeroplanes, bloodhounds, soldiers, and police are participating in the search. Colonel H. S. Stethcm, director of internment camps, is personally leading the hunt. A later message says an eleventh German was recaptured in a. wounded condition.
AUSTRALIAN EXPENDITURE
FINANCING THE WAR EFFORT SYDNEY, April 19. The Federal Government will have to provide for an expenditure of probably £375,000,000 next financial year, equal to about £53 per head of population, including children, says the ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ Canberra correspondent. The total estimated expenditure this financial year ending on June 30 is £270,000,000. To meet next year’s expenditure increased taxation of about £21,000,000 and a huge borrowing programme will be necessary. War costs at home and abroad are expected to amount to £225.000,000. compared with this year’s £143,000,000.
