LINER REQUISITIONED

AMERICAN MARITIME COMMISSION FIRST STEP IN AID PLAN NEW YORK, April 18. (Received April 19, at 8 a.m.) The ‘ Journal of Commerce ’ says the Maritime Commission requisitioned the American Export liner Exemplar. This is regarded as the first step in the move to utilise a large number of fast American cargo vessels to aid Britain. The Exemplar, although scheduled to dock in Boston to-day, was ordered to deviate to - New York to be unloaded as speedily as possible so that it may be taken over on Saturday. It is reported that numerous other fast liners will be taken over in a few days.

FREE SPEECH IN AMERICA GOVERNMENT POLICY OUTLINED WASHINGTON, April 17. President Roosevelt told the American Society of Newspaper Editors that there would he no Government control of news except that involving vital military information. He said that free speech was the undisputed possession of the Press, the radio, and motion pictures.
