CONFERENCE CONCLUDED The president of the National Executive of the Federated Catholic Clubs of New Zealand (Mr S. E. Mee) presided at a banquet in Lake’s Restaurant last evening, when the annual conference was brought to a close. Bishop Whyte was'the guest of honour. The loyal toast being honoured, Mr J. B. Cull (immediate past president)? proposed the toast of “ The Hierarchy and Clergy.” Bishop Whyte, in replying, congratulated the winners of the competitions, and paid a tribute to the high standard of public speaking exhibited by the competitors. His Lordship said that he would impress upon them the need for using their talent, even if-.doing so. meant sacrifices to themselves, for knowledge without good example? would not suffice. Father .Loughnan and Brother M, D, Cervetto (Principal of the Christian Brothers’ High* School) also replied. Other toasts honoured were “The Federation of Catholic Clubs and Societies of New Zealand ” (proposed by Mr W. J. Butler and replied to by Mr J. E. Mee); ■“ The Winning Team ” (Mr P. F. Mulrennan); “ The judges ” (Staff Sergeant W. Jessett—■ Father. Loughnan and Mr W. J. Meade). Bishop Whyte presented the Hayward Shield to the winning team, and diplomas to the other prize winners. CONFERENCE BUSINESS. Since the competitions were commenced on Saturday morning, the National Executive from time to time discussed matters of . interest to the welfare of Catholic clubs throughout New Zealand. _ Remits from various clubs were considered, and, suggestions with reference to the next conference received. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows Patrons Archbishop O’Shea, S.M., D.D. (Wellington), Bishop Whyte, D.D. (Dunedin), Bishop Brodia (Christchurch), and Bishop Liston (Auckland); president, Mr S. E. Mee; vice-president, Mr T. B. Mooney; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. F. Curran ; honorary vice-presidents—Messrs A. L. Curry (Christchurch), F. Walker (Invercargill), Michael Kelly (Westland), and L. Collins (Timaru); committee—Messrs P. Cull, F. R. Hinsley, O. C. Toomey, J. B. Cull, and J. D. Bergin. Mr H M-Keown, foundation secretary of the movement, was elected a life member of the federation. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks to the retiring executive. COMPETITION RESULTS. Following are the results of the petitions:Debate.—Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club T, St. Columba Club, Greymoutb, 2; St. Mary’s Literary and Debating Club, Hokitika, J. Hinsley (Dunedin Hibernian Club) 2, Mr W, Hamilton (St Columba Club, Greymoutb) 3. Oratory.—Mr L. D. Cooney (Marist Brothers’ Old Boys, Invercargill) 1. Mr O. O’Neill (St. Mary’s Debating Club, Christchurch) 2, Mr K. Mulrennan (St. Mary’s Debating Club, Hokitika) 3.

Impromptu Speech.—Mr W. J. Butler (St. Columba Club, Grey mouth) 1, Mr P. F. Mulrennan (St. Mary’s Debating Club, Hokitika) and Mr L. D. Cooney (Marist Brothers’ Old Boys, Invercargill) 2 (equal). Religious Questions. —Mr F. R. Hinsley (Dunedin Hibernians) 1, Mr P. F, Mulrennan (St. Mary's Debating Club, Hokitika) 2, Mr J. Kerr (St. Mary’s Debating Club 1 , Christchurch) and Mr P. Griffin (St. Patrick’s Club, Oamanil 3 (equal) . Billiards. Mr M. Musson (St. Alary’s Debating Club, Hokitika) 1, Air J. F. Kelly (St. Columba’s, Greymouth) 2. Mr L. Graham (St. Christopher’s Boys’ Club, Christchurch) 3. The Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club retained the Hayward Shield with an aggregate of 10 points. St. Columba Club, Greymouth, was second with 9 points, and St. Alary s Literary and Debating Club (Hokitika) third with Si points. Air F. R. Kinsley (Dunedin Hibernian) Avon the lawn tennis competition, Mr F. Walker (Alarist Brothers’ Old Boys, Invercargill) taking second place.
