Mr W. F. Buil, the Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, and Mrs Bull, are at present visiting Dunedin, and are staying at Wain’s Hotel. Mr John Farrell, representing the J. C. Williamson Theatres Ltd., arrived in Dunedin last night to complete arrangements for the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera season. Mr and Mrs Leslie Letfeaux are at present .visiting Dunedin, and are staying at Wain’s Hotel. visiting Dunedin for the purpose of looking into records and administration matters are Mr 0. T. Andrews, assistant staff director from Base Records Office, Wellington, and Captain J. D. Hutchinson, D.A.A.G., District Headquartei's, Southern Military Command, Christchurch. A motion of condolence with Mrs Price and Miss Price in the death of Mr 11. H. Price, late superintendent at the Central Fire Station, was carried at a meeting of (the Fire Committee of the Emergency Precautions Scheme, held on Wednesday night. Mr W. L. Newnham, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, and Mr T. M. Ball, assist engineer-in-chief, have been appointed chairman and deputy-chairman respectively of the Main Highways Board. The changes are consequent on the resignation from the board of the former engineer-in-chief. Mr John Wood.
Mr Will Thomas, of Timaru, was on Wednesday elected Governor of the fifty-third Rotary district, which includes New Zealand and the Fiji Islands. This is the second time Mr Thomas has occupied the office, the previous occasion being the year 1936-37. It has been announced by Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, that Colonel F. Waite, M.L.0., overseas commissioner for the board, will take charge of patriotic activities for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt next Monday. Colonel Waite has until recently been the board’s commissioner in London.
Mr D. Reese was elected president of the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association for the seventeenth year at the twenty-third annual meeting of the association this week. Mr G. S. A, Biltcliff, the secretary, has an even-longer record, being re-elected for a twentylirst term in that office. He was honoured by being elected a life member. Mr H. W. Gourlay was elected chairman of the Management Committee. At a meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Wellington.) this week, the chairman, Mr E. A. Batt, made reference to the death of Mr A. B. Ansell, who, ho_ said, had been a great force in organised motoring throughout New Zealand., Ho had been a member of the Automobile Association (Otago) and the South Island Motor Union, and his work as member of Parliament for Chalmers in the framing of the (Highways Act would last for a long time. A motion of appreciation was recorded.
At a well-attended meeting of the congregation of the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening it was agreed to extend a call to the Rev. H. O. Bowman, of Maheno. The charge was rendered vacant when the Rev. J. G. 3. Dunn accepted a call to the Opoho Church last December. Mr Bowman was ordained in 1935 and has a very creditable record in his present charge. He has been.; -associated with the Presbytery of Oataaru, and has done valuable work on many Presbytery committees. Ho is the convener of the Statistics Committee of the General Assembly. The call to Mr Bowman .will be available for signature at the Port Chalmers Church for the next two Sundays, and will probably come before the Presbytery of Dunedin at its next meeting on April 1.
