VARSITY SWIMMING TITLES

FOUR WINS TO P. I. FOX HIGHLY-SUGGESSFUL CARNIVAL The championship carnival conducted by the University Amateur Swimming Club at the Municipal Baths last night was one of the club’s most successful meetings in recent years, aud the standard generally showed improvement, the races being keenly contested by large fields in most cases._ _ A gratifying feature, 100, was the promising style revealed by many of the competitors. Winning tour events, P. B. Fox, the Varsity club captain, registered some very good performances, and his tussle in the 100yds with C. R. Buchanan was the best race of the night, Fox winning by a foot in 63 4-ssec. Fox went a solid race to win the 100yds back stroke in 75 4-ssec, and gave a confident display to carry off the men’s diving. He rounded these efforts off by carving out a smart 50yds free style to win the title in 28 l-ssec. Fox, who is a very capable all-round performer, is the well-known University A Rugby forward. C. R. Buchanan, who has won many New Zealand University titles while representing Auckland, was not troubled to win the 440yds men’s free style championship in 6mm 4sec and the furlong in 2min 47sec. One of the best performances in the men’s section was that of the former West End (Timaru) swimmer, J. Kendall, in the 50yds men’s fresher championship, won in 28 3-ssec. The junior medical team, in winning the 133 X-3yds four-a-side relay in Imin 12 4-ssec, also swam very creditably. The former Otago intermediate breast stroke champion, Miss Lynn Stockdill, won the 100yds women’s breast stroke title impressively in Imin 36 4-ssec, and handicap event clocked 26 2-ssoc for 33 l-3yds breast stroke. A dual winner was Miss J. Fraser, who took the 50yds free style championship in 33sec and later won the 100yds free style. At the conclusion of the carnival competitors and officials were entertained at supper in the Baths clubroom by students of the Home Science School. Results:—
