LADY NEWALL'S FROCKS

At the Christchurch civic reception on Saturday to their Excellencies the Governor-General, Marshal of the Royal Air Force iSir Cyril Newell, and Lady Newall, the latter wore a long frock of self-spotted brown sheer made with high neckline and short puffed sleeves, and finished with a sash of brown and biskra ribbon knotted at the side, with ends falling to the hem of the skirt. Her wide-brimmed hat of soft straw, trimmed with brown, matched her long biskra gloves, and she carried a brown parasol patterned in biskra and (lame in floral design. In the evening Sir Cyril and Lady Newall, accompanied by Wing Commander H. Revan, Military Secretary and Comptroller, and Mrs Bevan and Captain 0. J. Holland-Martin, A.D.C.. attended the performance of ‘ The Gondoliers ’ by the J. C. Williamson Company at the Theatre Royal. Just before 8 o’clock, when every seat fertile opera was booked and the theatre was humming with the pleasant excitement that always precedes the opening of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera season, news spread through the theatre that their Excellencies would attend—the first time for many years that viceroyalty has been present at a theatre performance in Christchurch. Bouquets for Her Excellency and for Mrs Bevan were presented by the management. Lady Newall wore a black crepe satin frock patterned in ivory in largo design, with vivid touches of red and green. Mrs Bevan wore a black f.-ock trimmed with bead embroidery.
