R. M’Millan) presented his report on tho performances of the Otago team at the New Zealand junior and women’s championship meeting at Wanganui last Saturday, at which Otago had gained five firsts, four seconds, and three thirds. Mr M’Millan referred to H, Nelson’s great effort in the milo junior championship, which ho had won in tho record lime of 4min 30sec. Had Nelson been pushed he might have clipped another six seconds off the record. K. J. Morgan had lowered his own record for tho discus throw with 130 ft 10 l-Bin, and also won the shot putt; Miss Nancy Hanlin won the women’s shot putt with 31ft 3in, but bad been unsuccessful in an attempt on her own record; while Miss Betty Forbes had surpassed all the others to once again win the women’s high jump in which she was unbeaten at sft. G- M. Webb ran a splendid race to finish second in the 220yds junior championship, and was definitely unlucky to miss qualifying for the final of the 100yds. Miss J. M’Grath was third in the lOOyds women’s event, and Miss B. Malone third in the 75yds women’s championship. Miss Malone was very unlucky nob to be placed in her heat of the 220yds, Mr M’Millan being critical of the judging in this event. Miss H. Race gained second place in the women’s javelin-throwing event; and the Umpire Games representative, Miss Mary Mitchell, said she. considered Miss Race, who is only 15, was the most promising javelin thrower she bad seen Otago’s other place had been gained by Miss Forbes in the women’s long jump. Mr M’Millan referred to the performances of the other Otago members, and also paid a tribute to the Wanganui officials for the hospitality extended to the visitors. He also expressed his appreciation of the efforts of the Otago delegate, Mr J. W. Holley. Mr M’Millan was thanked for his report.
