Mr J. S. Douglas and Mr R. H. Garbutt left for Christchurch this morning to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Plumbers’ Federation. Mr J. R. Fairbairn left this morning for Christchurch. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., Mr B. S. Connor, and Mr A. N. Haggitt left by the express yesterday afternoon for Invercargill, where sittings of the Armed Forces Appeal Board will be commenced to-day. Dr J, B. Dawson left yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the council of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association. Detective S. W. Cunningham, of the detective branch of the Christchurch Police Force, has been transferred to the detective branch at Timaru. Patients in the various local hospital institutions will regret to learn that Mr R. B. Middlemiss, organiser of the Otago Benevolent Concert Party, is at present an inmate of the Dunedin Hospital. The Otago junior men’s and women’s athletic team returned yesterday from Wanganui, where they competed in the New Zealand championships. They were met at the station by the president of the Otago Centre, Mr C. W. Clark. Mr T. H. Wilson, a pioneer in the Portland cement industry in New Zealand, has retired after 63 years’ continuous service with Wilson’s (N.Z.) Portland Cement Ltd. For the past 30 years Mr Wilson has held the position of works manager, first at Warkworth and later at Portland. Mr A. R. Galbraith will end his period of service as engineer to the Christchuch City Council on April 1. Mr E. Somers will then take office in that capacity. The council has decided to grant Mr Galbraith the usual retiring leave and also, six weeks’ deferred local leave. Mr C. N. B. French, whose name appeared in the recent ballot, enlisted for service overseas some time ago and has been in an overseas camp for the past five months. At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, the resignation was accepted with regret of the Rev. D. J. B. Dorman, who has been appointed vicar of Waitaki. The president (Mr C. W. Clark) congratulated Mr Dorman on his appointment, and expressed keen appreciation of Mr Dorman’s services as the delegate on the centre of the St. Paul’s Club (Invercargill) and as a field judge. Mr D. C. Kidd, M.P. for Waitaki, is now making a rapid recovery after his second operation at the Christchurch Public Hospital and will soon be able to resume bis Parliamentary duties.
