❖ QUESTIONS CF TO-DAY The conlinuatioii of tlu? fiffy-eighth annua) assembly of the Congregational Union was held this morning in the View Street Hall, Business included the adoption of the Public Questions Committee’s report, moved by the chairman (Rev. C. C. Hoskins). Inter alia, this stated that in regard to three questions discussed by the committee—the establishment of wet canteens in military camps, the appointment of n judge of the Supreme Court to the Alien Control Emergency Board, and the taxation of legacies intended lor religions and charitable purposes—the recommendation of the committee bad later been followed by the Government. Ocher business included a motion of loyalty. A tribute was paid to the memory of Mr Thomas Forsyth, an exMinister of education, and a treasurer of the union of long standing. His death occurred in the north about a month ago deports adopted included the College Council report and the Church Union report. A committee was .appointed to enter into negotiations with Presbyterian and Methodist churches in regard to eventual union. Last night at the evening session an address was delivered by the dev. George Jackson on the subject 1 What is the Message of Christ for To-day?’ Mr Jackson, who hails from Green Lane, Auckland, delivered a thoughtful and inspiring message. The chairman was Mr M’Qnillan (Gore). Mr George Wilkinson was at the organ, and the united church choirs sang an anthem and led the other singing under the baton of Mr W, R. Sinclair. I
