Laudreth were, prim to their return to camp at the week-end tho guests of honour at a function tendered by the residents of Owaka. Othei soldiers present were L. Ibbotson, 1. Brown, J. M’Phee, and A. Behrens. The evening was devoted to dancing, and dur ing an interval Mr G. Chapmau-Cohei (chairman of the Patriotic presented the men with an envelope containing a monetary gift, accompanied by bcsl wishes. Good wishes were also extended by Mr J. C. M’Lachlan (R.S.A.), Dr H N. Johnson, and Finlayson. FIRE AT WAIHOLA. About 10.4-5 a.m. on Sunday a four roomed house occupied by Mr and Mrs Allan Young near the railway station al Waihola was destroyed by fire. The occu pants were away at church, and wher the fire was discovered it had a good hold and the efforts of residents were fruitless in saving it or the contents, which wen totally destroyed. BATHER IN DIFFICULTIES. Kaka Point was the scene of a neai drowning tragedy on Sunday afternoon The Balciutha Swimming and Life Saving Club was holding a picnic there, and tin ladies’ team had just finished surf dnl when the alarm was given. A young man David Bond, of Balciutha, had gone beyond the breakers and got into diflicultur in the backwash. Mr W. -Hudson heart ins calls for help and went to his assist mice, but was dragged under by the Strug gling man. Others went to tho assistant of the two men, who were brought to land Both were unconscious, but after nrtificia resuscitation had been applied neither wa; much the worse for the experience. Pro min cut in tho rescue party were Mrs W M’Donald and Mr T. Stevenson. TENNIS. Stirling defeated Balciutha B by 8 set' (69 games) to 8 sets (64 games). Tokoit defeated Milburn by 13 sets (84 games) tc 3 sets (53 games). Milton B defeated Mil ton A by 9 sets (97 games) to 7 sets (8! games). BOWLING. In a match Milton Club v. Bruce Wool! n Mills, played on the Milton green on Saturday afternoon, the mill team came <m on top by 140 points to 117. S. Mounlford and L. Edwards met las night in the final of tho Balciutha Club' singles championship, and a great tnssl ended in a draw, 15 points each. As ; result a further match will have to U played.
