CANTERBURY GRAIN

NO EXPORT BUYING MARKET CONSEQUENTLY WEAK [Peb United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 7. Prices in the grain and produce markets, particularly for small seeds, appear to have settled down in the meantime, though there is no real strength in the market. At present a normally good seasonal demand exists for autumn sowing, but there is no buying for export or against the possibility of export later on. It is probable that the present situation will remain more or less unchanged until after Paster, after which the outlook is uncertain, as it will depend entirely on what shipping is available for general cargoes. A steady llnw of white clover is maintained. Samples vary widely, and yields have also shown marked differences. 'I he price for good seed is from Is 9d to 2s per lb, but sales down to as low as lOd for inferior qualify have been made. Ryegrass remains steady at. about 3s 6d io 4s for botli perennial and Italian. The southern crop, which is beginning to come in, promises well, and the_ indicated price for southern seed, which is ss, f.0.b., is about Is below the local price. It is likely that when (he southern seed comes on to the market in any quantity the local market will suffer. Not a great amount of cocksfoot is coming in from the Peninsula, and values remain at np to Is for good seed. Chaff has been in slightly belter demand, and the price is now £3 15s on trucks. Peas are slightly weaker because of the increasihgly obscure shipping position. Best Mo. 1 partridge arc worth np to 6s. The recent gale has done a good deal of damage to peas, and many growers have found that large portions of their crop have disappeared.
