SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED
PRESENTATIONS TO MEN KARITANE AND PUKETERAKI. The residents of Karitane and Puko t'eraki held two social evenings, one on Saturday last for Gunner W. Barrett and on Wednesday for Privates Rangi and Huri Ellison, son and grandson respectively of Mr John Ellison, of Puketeraki. Mr Vickers (chairman of the local Patriotic Committee) presided and, presented each soldier with a gold medal from the residents. The soldiers suitably replied. Other speakers were Messrs Lloyd, Te' Tan, Parata, Woods, Ellison, and Matthews; Dancing was interspersed with songs and hakas. HIGHCLIFF. The residents of Highcliff district entertained Trooper H. Hall and Gunner G. Donaldson, at a social on Wednesday night. The evening’s entertainment took the form of a dance interspersed with various items. The main feature was the presentation of a shaving set to each of the soldiers. The chairman, Mr G. Farquhar, wished, them every good wish on behalf of all those present. MUSSELBURGH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Privates J. Hollands and P. Mercer, of Musselburgh, were each presented with a fountain pen by the congregation of the Musselburgh Presbytdriau '■ Church this week. MERTON DISTRICT. On Tuesday last the residents of Merton and surrounding districts gave a social evening to Privates Henry Scott and Stanley White. On behalf of the gathering Mr Chisman (chairman of the local Patriotic Committee) expressed the good wishes of those present and presented the men with moneybolts Mr H. Herd and Mr Penno, both of Dunedin, also spoke. Enjoyable items were presented by Mrs Chisman, Misses Pat and Ethel Scott, and Mr Te Tau’s party from Karitane. MEMBER OF ‘TABLET’ STAFF. A pleasant ceremony took place at the office of the New Zealand Tablet : Company, Dunedin, yesterday, ivhen Private John Clark was entertained by the staff. The manager, on behalf of all- departments, presented Private Clark with a.gift and assured him of the pride and esteem all entertained for him in his serving his King and country. The manager’s remarks were supported by representatives of each department, and Private Clark mad» suitable acknowledgment. GRAND HOTEL STAFF. The staff of the Grand Hotel met last evening to make a presentation to Mr Andrew Stephen, a member of tba armed forces. Mr A. A. Paape, presenting him with a pocketbook, pen, and pencil on behalf of the staff, referred to his long service and excellent qualities.
