PORT CHALMERS FIRE
BOAT-BUILDING PREMISES GUTTED Through an outbreak of fire last night, Messrs Miller and Tannage, an old-established firm of boat-builders at Port Chalmers, were very heavy losers. The fire, which resulted in the alarm being given at 9.15, almost completely destroyed the premises, but, what was more " serious, caused the loss of machinery which, at the present time, it will be difficult to replace. A stock of seasoned timber was also lost. One boat, under construction in the shed, was burnt. A house owned and. occupied by Mr D. Monti, opposite th? buildings, was scorched and narrowly escaped destruction. The fire engine was soon on the scene, but the water supply is not laid, on in the area, consequently water had_to be pumped from the harbour, but this procedure was hindered through it being low tide. The insurances on the premises are held 'by the F.A.M.E. Company.
