OYSTER DISPUTE

FRUITLESS NEGOTIATIONS MERCHANT'S OFFER REJECTED [Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, February 20. No progress was made to-day in regard to a settlement of the oyster dispute. Although the Government instructed tho parties yesterday to settle tlieir differences immediately, to-day’s negotiations were not successful. It is nut yet known what form tho threatened Government intervention will take. A representative of the Southland Employers' Association, Air Alsweilor, had a telephone conversation to-day with the president of the men’s union, Air Spencer, about the action to be taken by the parties to comply with the instructions of the Government for a settlement of tfie dispute. The chief point at issue was the interpretation of the award given by the Industrial Court last year. An offer was made on behalf of the merchants to refer the dispute to a Disputes Committee set up under the terms of the Employment Act, hut il was stated that this had been rejected.
