HOLIDAY TRAFFIC
EXCEPTIONALLY HEAVY RUSH MOST RESORTS WELL BOOKED The district manager of the Government tourist traffic (Mr R. G. Sincock) stated to-day that tourist traffic oyer the Christmas and New Year period will be exceptionally heavy. With the exception of Wellington, the venue of the Exhibition last year, indications are that all the other well-known resorts will be heavily booked' as they usually are. The experience has been this year that because of the uncertainty in their plans many people did not make their arrangements very far ahead, and as a result there has been an exceptionally heavy rush during the last week or 10 days. Dunedin itself always gets exceptionally heavy bookings from industrial and clerical workers, and this year is no exception, while family parties are just as numerous as usual.
It has been noticed! that by virtue of the petrol restrictions many holidaymakers who in previous years have utilised their own cars are this year hooked for rail and service car travel, and in consequence trains over , the holidays will probably be just as heavily loaded as usual. Another point, too, is that accommodation houses in some of the better known resorts will benefit from the hookings, due to so many caravans being off the road. So far as the southern resorts are concerned, accommodation at all of them has been heavily booked, but there is still a little accommodation available at Stewart Island. Most of the bookings are up to January 4 or 5, after which accommodation should be available at any of the resorts, providing that reasonably early application is made.
