TRANSPORT COMMITTEE
APPLICATION FOR EXTENDED LICENSE
An application by Messrs Bootten and' Gray, taxi proprietors, of Port Chalmers, for an amendment to their existing license came before the Dunedin District Transport Licensing Committee yesterday afternoon. The appellants, represented by Mr W. J. Meade, sought an additional taxi license, thus increasing their authority to three. The Otago Ta.xi Proprietors’ Association, represented by Mr H. Newall, lodged an objection. The committee was presided over by Mr M. C. Henderson. Mr Meade pointed out, in support of the application, that Port Chalmers had no public transport system and that the taxi firms had therefore to provide abouf 90 per cent, of the purely local transport. The applicant had found that, particularly since the petrol restrictions had come into force, taxis;.were used to ,a greater; extent by private owners, and two cars were not sufficient to cope with the demands for his services.
On behalf of the objector, Mr Newall said that if a total of four licenses had previously been, sufficient for Port Chalmers, there was now no need for any more, especially as in the near future the volume of business was likely to decrease. After hearing evidence, the authority declined the application.
