The mayor (Mr A. H, 'Allen) left this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting | of the National Patriotic Council. ' .... Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., left this morning for Wellington. Congratulations and host wishes were extended to Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., on his appointment as Leader of the Opposition at the weekly luncheon of the Christchurch Business Men’s Club yesterday. The president (Mr V. G. Spillor) said the appointment brought honour to Mr Holland and distinction to the o'lub. A function took place on Friday last during the lunch hour at the Roslyn Woollen Mills, the occasion being to present Mr Pringle Walker with an electric heater and bed lamp on his leaving the firm owing to health. Mr J. Smith, on behalf of the hosiery workers, in making the presentation, referred to the long continuous service put in by Mr Walker since the ear 1 - clays when the hosiery trade was in its infancy. The ‘ Gazette ’ announces that Mr E. W. Hunt, of Wellington, has been appointed to succeed Sir Harold Beauchamp as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum.
Mr 0. Cheyne, of the Grey mouth staff of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to Christchurch. Mr Cheyne was in Dunedin for a number of years. Dr J. Cairney has been appointed by the Wellington Hospital Board as acting superintendent and director of clinical services for three months, following the resignation through illhealth of the superintendent, Dr A. IR. Thorne. After 40 years’ service, first with the Post and Telegraph Department, apd later with the Internal Affairs Depart-, ment, Mr A. W. Pyne, chief clerk of the latter department, has retired. . Members of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Afhlctic Association and representatives of the various clubs met last night to show their appreciation in tangible form of the service given to the sport by Mr B. IR. APKernan, who recently relinquished office as a vice-president and as liandicapper of the centre. A presentation was made by the president of the centre (Mr C. AV. Clark), who referred to Mr APKernan’s long association with the sport and to his experience in all phases of amateur athletics, culminating in his appointment as coach and trainer of the New Zealand team at the Empire Games in Sydney in 1938. Air Clark said that Air APKernan had given great service as the centre’s handicapper, and ho was sure that he would retain his interest. Air 'APKernan returned thanks for the sentiments expressed and for the gift that had been made. Registrations at AA’ain’s Hotel include Air A. E. Haymnn, Air M. J. Fry (Auckland), Air J.
