IRON GUARD SAVAGERY

EXECUTIONS IN RUMANIA SOTT-fNI POLITICAL PRISONERS SHOT BUCHAREST, November 27. (Recevied November 28, at Ip.m.) The Iron Guard shot dead 64 political prisoners, including M. Argesheanu and M. Marinescu, also the secret service chief, M. Morozow, and M, Stefanescu, former Chief of Police. The executions are apparently the beginning of a vast Iron Guard vengeance purge. Many other notables have been arrested, ncluding M. Gigureu, the former Minister of Communications, M. Argetoianu, former leader of the Agrarian Union Party, and Genreal Ilasievic, the last chief of King Carol’s Military Cabinet. The Berlin News Agency describes M. Argesheanu as the man who nocent legionaries after M. Codreanu’s death in September, 1939, and adds that M. Marinescu was the accomplice of M. Morozow, who controlled the espionage service for King Carol. One general, two majors, and one policeman (who allegedly ordered and supervised the Codreanu shooting) were also executed, in addition to 14 policemen who carried out the shooting. The ringleaders subsequently reported the executions to General Anionescu and surrendered. A message from Rome states that the ‘ Giornale d’ltalia ’ stated that the executions, whose instigator is unknown, were carried out before M. Cordeanu’s tomb was opened. A message from Zurich says telephonic communication between Switzerland and Rumania is impossible, due to an extensive disturbance in the Bucharest Exchange.
