EXPANSION LEAGUE

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The meeting of the Executive Committee of the Otago Expansion League was held on Tuesday evening, Mr H. M. Mackay presiding. A tribute was paid to the memory of Sir Percy Sargood, who was for many years a vice-president of the league and a member who strongly supported its action, especially in connection with country developments. A special minute recording the members’ appreciation of his services and their regret at his passing was carried, members standing in silence. Correspondence from the Minister of Public Works in connection with the proposal to straighten and level the Port road was received, the decision of the department, that the work was of too groat a magnitude to be undertaken at present, being accepted. It was decided that this reading project and the extension of the irrigation system in the Upper Clutha and the Maniototo, be kept in view as suitable post-war work, to provide remunerative work for returned men

The principal business of the evening was the consideration of the Canterbury Progress League’s proposals in connection with the problem of soil erosion, and the proapedt of light metal production in the Squth Island. An invitation frdm that league to meet in Christchurch on December 3 was accepted, Mr H. M. Mackey and Mr W. B. Steel (secretary) being appointed delegates. Mr R. T. Stewart had prepared a report on tho soil erosion problems, which he read to the meeting and received a hearty vote of thanks. It- was resolved to submit it to the conference to be considered along with the Canterbury proposals. Further action was held over till the full statements and suggestions of the conference had been made known, the delegates’ report io be considered at the nest meeting of the executive.
