Group Captain J. T. Saunders, Chief of the Air Staff, arrived from the north, last night. Major L. S. Rogers, R.A.M.C., re* ceutly of Te Awamutu, has been appointed surgical specialist to the York Military Hospital, the main permanent hospital of the Northern Command in Britain.
Mr R. Merrett Wilkinson has been elected a member of the Pharmacy, Board of New Zealand, representing chemists of the combined districts of Otago and Southland. The Minister of Marine, Dr D. G., M'Millan, is to be a candidate for the position of president of the New Zealand Labour Party, at the election to take place at the 1941 Easter conference to be held at Wellington, Mr J. Roberts is the present president, Dr M'Millan vice-president. Reference to the death of Sir Percy, Sargood was made by the president! (Mr H. L. Paterson) at the monthly, meeting last night of' the St. John Ambulance Association. Sir Percy was patron of the Otago centre. Members stoqd in silence as a mark of respect. Reference to the death of Colonel A. E. Stewart, of Dunedin, was made at the annual meeting of shareholders of the Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company yesterday afternoon by the chairman (Mr Peter M‘Skimming), who said that Colonel Stewart had put' a great deal of energy into the business as a shareholder and director for many years.
Six Presbyterian chaplains are withi the New Zealand troops overseas, according to the Rev, J. E. Lopdell, who announced their names at the General! Assembly of the church in Palmerston North. They are the Revs. G. A. : D. Spence, R. T. Dodds, R. J. Griffiths,. J. W. M'Kenzie, J. S. Strang, and K, J. Watson The Revs. H. A. Mitchell, R. G. M'Dowall, A. Macfarlane, and N„ F. Sansom are at present in camps in New Zealand waiting to go overseas* The Rev. J. W. M'Kenzie has been selected as tlie senior chaplain overseas with the rank of third class. The Revs. A. G. Gardiner a*d G. Taylor have entered Air Force stations as permanent chaplains: Mr Gardiner has been posted to Hobsonville and Whenuapai, and Mr Taylor to Wigrara and Harewood, while_ the Rev. C. Mackenzie, of St. David’s, Petone, and the Rev. K. H. Evans, of Warkworth, have been appointed for chaplain’s duty for three months in territorial catnps. The Rev. H. 0. Bowman has given servica at Burnham, and the Rev. lan Fraser at Dunedin. The Rev. John Davie, of Knox College, Masterton, the chosen Moderator Designate of the Presbytpriah Assembly, studied in the Theological Hall of the Presbyterian Church at Knox College, Dunedin, and was ordained to the ministry and inducted to his first charge at Dipton, Southland, in 190 G. He ministered in Dipton for five and a-half years, during which time He organised the missionary .finances of the Presbyteries of Mataura and Southland, by which the Rev. J. A. Ryburn. was sent out as missions to India. Mr Davie removed to Hokitika (Westland), where he ministered for three years. He was called to Palmerston North,where he ministered for eight and a-half years. During his Palmerston, ministry the church sent out Miss M* Salmond, M.A., as an educational missionary to the Punjab,- India. Eighteen years ago Mr Davie- was called to Knox Church, Masterton. In Masterton he has contributed very largely to the growth and equipment of tho Masterton Congregation. He was instrumental in building a fine primary, department of the Sunday school and a girls’ Bible class block. After a serious fire occurred, a modern youth block was erected at the cost of £10,600 and opened free of debt. At last night’s meeting of the board of directors of the Y.M.C.ji. the following resolution was carried:—“ That this board places on record its deep appreciation of the valuable services rendered to this association by the late Sir Percy Sargood. During his lifetime he took a deep and personal interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A.When the present building was erected he took a prominent part in the raisin" of the necessary funds, and himselfi contributed generously to this appeal. For very many years he was a trustee of the association, and right up tfii his death took a very active part in its affairs and continued his generous financial support. The board expresses its deep sympathy to Lady Sargood and family in the loss they have ‘ susv ta L Parton, a graduate of the.
