SHANGHAI COURTS

TAKEN OVER BY JAPANESE FRENCH CONTROL RELINQUISHED SHANGHAI, November 8. (Received November 9, at 8 a.m.) The Japanese are apparently on the verge of taking over control of the Chungking-controlled second special district court and the third Kiangsu High Court, which is situated in the French Concession. The Nanking regime recently appointed judges to take over the Benches. The Japanese and French refused to make statements, but the courts are under the heaviest French guard, including six armoured cars and other military units, and plain-clothes police. The French arrested a German Jewish refugee and a news photographer, who was making an effort to cover events on behalf of the American-owned Shanghai ‘ Evening Post.’ A later message says the Japanese announced that the French had handed ow the courts. PEARL RIVER REOPENING FOR SHIPPING HONGKONG, November 8. (Received November 9, at 9.30 a.m.) Semi-official Japanese sources report that the Pearl River is being reopened on November 9 to vessels plying between Macao, Hongkong, and Canton. The river trade was previously closed by the Japanese, allegedly owing to cholera epidemic*.
